Listen for Haiyan

Hey guys! I’m glad to be back! From now on, I’m going to try to make my blog posts a little more personal. I apologise if I’ve seemed cocky or holier-than-thou in any of my previous entries. This changes now!

So to get the ball rolling, I’m going to talk about an event that my school is holding this coming Tuesday!

It’s a spoken poetry event (if you’re interested in that kind of thing, you can come down to School of the Arts, Singapore at 6.15pm on Tuesday, 11 February 2014. It’s $7 per ticket) to raise funds for last year’s Haiyan typhoon.

This particular spoken poetry thingy is pretty interesting, because it isn’t a poetry slam, and it isn’t just reading poetry. It’s a showcase of original works. And I am honoured to be performing!

So why am I sharing this?

(Getting to the point is not a strong… point of mine.)

Because it’s a showcase of original works, I’ve taken the liberty to construct a poem about Jesus (again, if you’re even mildly curious, please come down! It’s going to be brilliant, and it’s for a great cause). Initially, I had no intention of doing this, but the girl organising the event told me we needed a couple more poems, because the event was kind of short, and would I mind doing a second poem.

I am a push-over, so I said yes.

It didn’t really cross my mind to write a completely new poem. I dug through all my old stuff, but none of them are really suited to spoken poetry (a lot of my poetry leans towards being visual, so you read them with your heart, not your voice. They don’t have the wonderful rhythm and intensity that you hear in spoken word.) so I decided I’d write a new one.

It must’ve been God who whispered, “Jesus sent me a Hallmark card” and that was when I realised that God was totally ready to write me a poem for this poetry concert. And He did!

The girl in charge of the event is Christian as well, thank God, so instead of objecting to the obstinately religious content of my work, she whispered, “I like that poem”, and is letting me perform it.

But this is why I need your help.

I believe that God wants to be heard through this poem. I believe God wants to be heard through this whole event. And I believe that we’ve gotta pray hard for this event, pray hard for His work to be done through this. Commit the event to Him, because this blue whale of an event is being meticulously organised by just two seventeen-year-old girls (another reason you should help and come for this event). And, I promise this isn’t meant to sound selfish, but I’d really appreciate it if you’d keep me in your prayers as well. Pray that I’ll remember the poems, and won’t stumble over my words. Pray that I’ll be able to behave and speak in a way that glorifies God, and not shy away from explaining the poem to people post-presentation.

I’m really excited (but also extremely scared) for this event. Hope you guys can make it! God be with you this coming week!
